Although marijuana and hashish are produced practically everywhere in and around Afghanistan, the best kinds of hash originate from the Northern provinces between Hindu Kush and the Russian border (Balkh, Mazar-i-Sharif). Here the plants used for hash production are short, compact Indicas that grow and flower quickly and produce an abundant amount of resin.

Afghan hash is made from the dried flowers and leaves, which are threshed and sieved by the farmer to produce a trichome-rich powder. The hashish is then pressed by hand under addition of a small quantity of tea or water. The resinous powder is worked on until it becomes a highly elastic mass and takes on its signature spicy, floral scent.

Three decades after Carl Linnaeus first classified Cannabis sativa in 1753, French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck published a description of a second species of Cannabis, which he named Cannabis indica. American biologist Richard Evans Schultes described the Cannabis indica plant as relatively short, conical, and densely branched, whereas sativa was described as tall and laxly branched. Professor of Biological Science, Loran C. Anderson of Florida State University, described the leaves of indica plants as short and broad, whereas those of sativa are characterized as relatively long and narrow. Cannabis indica plants conforming to Schultes's and Anderson's descriptions may have originated from the Hindu Kush mountain range. Because of the often harsh and variable (extremely cold winters, and warm summers) climate of those parts, Cannabis indica is well-suited for cultivation in temperate climates.

In Afghanistan marijuana has been cultivated in for thousands of years, to the extent that distinctive landraces have become established, and a putative subspecies Cannabis sativa var. afghanica was proposed by the Russian botanist Nikolai Vavilov in 1926—although much confusion surrounds Afghan cannabis' place in the nomenclature. To add to this confusion, the reputed cannabis botanist Robert Connell Clarke placed Cannabis afghanica with the indica subspecies, leading to it being occasionally referred to in the literature as Cannabis indica var. afghanica. Whatever the case may be, Cannabis afghanica exhibits many of the indica traits: The leaves are usually extremely wide, and are dark green with occasional purple tinges. The cannabinoid content is high in THC but also high in CBD and CBN, leading to a soporific, sedative effect. The mature plant rarely exceeds two metres in height, and there is little space between the internodes and dense, resin-rich flower sites. Broad-leafed Cannabis indica plants in India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan are traditionally cultivated for the production of charas. Pharmacologically, C. indica landraces tend to have a higher cannabidiol (CBD) content than Cannabis sativa strains. Some commercially available indica strains have been selected for high levels of CBD, with some users reporting more of a "stoned" feeling and less of a "high" from Cannabis indica when compared to Cannabis sativa. The Cannabis indica high is often referred to as a "body buzz" and has beneficial properties such as pain relief in addition to being an effective treatment for insomnia and an anxiolytic, as opposed to sativa's more common reports of a "spacey" and mental inebriation, and even, albeit rarely, comprising hallucinations. Differences in the terpenoid content of the essential oil may account for some of these differences in effect. Common indica strains for recreational or medicinal use include Kush and Afghani #1.

Cannabis in Afghanistan has been cultivated for centuries, and experienced relatively little interference until the 1970s. While traditional cultivation and largely local consumption of cannabis was common in Afghanistan, the development of the Hippie Trail in the 1970s brought an influx of young tourists with an appetite for hashish to Afghanistan which led to tensions between Afghanistan and the US.

The mythical figure Baba Ku is generally acknowledged to be the founding father of cannabis culture in Afghanistan and he is traditionally depicted smoking a giant shisha ot hooka water-pipe. Regarding it as both a devine sacrament and a medicine, Baba Ku and his followers, it's said, consumed hashish in vast quantities.
